What changes when engineers work at completely different physical scales? This panel brings together engineers and technical leaders from industries ranging from high-precision detector and high-speed machine technology to energy infrastructure and railway networks. Together, they will discuss how the scale of a system influences the way engineers design, test, iterate, and solve problems. How do you design technology where extreme precision, tiny tolerances, and high speeds can determine whether a system works? How do you design systems that must reliably move electricity, goods, and people across entire countries? And despite these differences, which engineering challenges remain surprisingly similar? Our speakers will talk about the technologies they work on, what a typical engineering role looks like, the tools and workflows they use, and the challenges that often only appear once a design meets the real world. The moderated panel discussion will be followed by an open Q&A session, where students can ask the speakers their own questions. This event begins with a keynote from the ETH Career Center on "Job Search Strategies" open to all ETH students, and ends with a panel discussion featuring former AMIV students now established in their careers across a variety of professional fields. Students and graduates looking for meaningful employment often feel it is time-consuming, frustrating, and that it takes a good deal of commitment. Locating a position that matches their interests, needs, abilities, and goals may not be easy, and may even be utopic in some market conditions. During this presentation, the audience will learn to optimize their entry onto the job market and how to make this rite of passage a rewarding life experience. Topics include: • The career management cycle • Reactive vs. proactive search strategies • Common job search misconceptions • Ways to stay motivated The panel that follows brings the AMIV alumni together to reflect on their diverse journeys, sharing insights into their fields and positions, the skills that matter most, and how they found their way into their current roles.
